Our Story

A Higher Level of Security

In 2020, Co-Founder and President Josh Gilbert saw the carnage and distress of both the public and the businesses of the riots. He realized that there had to be a change to the field of criminal justice. This idea began to take shape when he came together with his fellow co-founders and owners, Doug Gilbert and Josh Ginter, and decided to pool their collective experience to make the vision a reality. The SMSS Leadership Team believes that in order to see the change you want in the world, you have to be the change. So, on June 14th, 2025, the partners broke bread at Magnolia's in Purcellville and decide to go in on the vision, and that day Saint Michael's Security LLC was born.


St. Michael’s Security Services sets a higher standard for private security by combining professional precision with trust, courage and integrity. With degrees in criminal justice and experience in private security, its founders saw a need and set out to be defined by discipline, accountability, and reliability. Every officer who wears the St. Michael’s badge understands that protection is not just a job: it’s a calling.


St. Michael, the Archangel, represents protection, justice, and defense of the innocent, the same principles that guide each security officer. These values shape every interaction: with clients, with the public, and within the team itself. St. Michael’s strives to be a quiet strength: visible when needed, invisible when not, but always present with purpose. Whether securing a business, an event, or a community space, St. Michael’s provides each client with tailored services. Joshua D. Gilbert

   Chief of Security


Chief Joshua "Josh" Gilbert serves as the head of security and President of the company.


Josh has been in retail management and loss prevention for over five years, managing multi-million-dollar businesses and large teams of employees that often ranked as the top store for training in the region. His customer service skills and contract management has brought economic boom to his stores and high satisfaction rate with his clientele. Beyond this his background in law and legal research, with a specialization in the private sector, ensures that the company and you the client remain compliant and out of legal trouble, minimizing liability.


Josh holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Franciscan University of Steubenville and is currently seeking his master's as part of the university's 4+1 program. He also holds certifications in the Incident Command System of FEMA and various business management courses. He believes strongly in quality training and proficiency in the tools of self-defense. He holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and actively scores high marks in marksmanship. Furthermore, he believes strongly in maintaining good relations with both clients and the community.

Joshua R. Ginter

   Deputy Chief of Operations


Deputy Chief Joshua "JR" Ginter serves as the head of the Operations Bureau and Vice President of the company.


Josh has held a variety of positions over his years of experience, but they have all tended towards one thing, service. Often holding a leadership role in volunteer or non-profit organizations, he takes it upon himself to lead others in doing the right thing. He believes strongly in giving back to the community. His volunteer work through being an Eagle Scout and Unit Commander of the Franciscan University's Auxiliary University Program of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has helped many, including leading the effort to restore the old blue wall of the Steubenville Marina that had been left to rot for years, bringing beauty back to the old city.


Josh holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Franciscan University of Steubenville and is currently seeking his master's as part of the university's 4+1 program like Director Gilbert. He holds a variety of training and certifications from the Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security in marine safety, emergency management, and personal security. He avidly advocates for personal fitness in his officers for not only their health and safety but to fulfill our mission to the client.


Douglas B. Gilbert

   Deputy Chief of Administration


 Deputy Chief Douglas "Doug" Gilbert serves as the head of the Administrative Bureau and Vice President of the company. 


Doug is an industry veteran of over 25 years in both physical and cyber security. He has been responsible for protecting properties by assessing threats and mitigating them with physical barriers and electronic monitoring, alerting and lighting systems. He knows the

importance of managing a well-trained guard force that protects their clients and each other.


 Doug is an active member of ASIS and various other organizations. He earned the Certified Protection Profession (CPP) certification as well as the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Certified Information Security Systems Professional (CISSP), Project Management Professional (PMP) and other certifications. He holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Boston College and a master's degree in human relations from Duquesne University.

Organizational Chart, Divisions, and Positions

Official Company Organization

Here at Saint Michael's Security Services, we seek to provide all services that you would require and so we have numerous departments under our umbrella with dedicated personnel. If you are seeking a career with us, this document provides the various opportunities and advancement within our company. At the core of our company is the fact that every member, both uniformed in the Operations Bureau and non-front facing in the Administrative Bureau, is a trained and licensed security officer so that we work as one team to serve the client through the same standards across the board. We will always meet your needs, no matter what!

Operations Bureau

The first half of our company is organized under the Operations Bureau and handles all physical security services that we render to our clients. 


This is primarily the Uniformed Security Division, which contains a majority of our manpower. Here there are individual contract teams of either static posts or vehicle patrol depending on the needs of the client which are managed by either a Sergeant or Lieutenant depending on the amount of personnel and size of the post or patrol area. Our Sergeants and Lieutenants are highly vetted supervisors that go through specialized leadership training courses to ensure you are properly protected. Groups of these contract teams are assigned to regional contract sections, each managed by a Captain which are senior managers within our company that have years of experience and qualifications. All of these regional contract sections are overseen by a Major who reports to our Deputy Chief of Operations to ensure the SMSS brand quality is carried out at every site we protect.


For more specialized matters, we have our Specialized Security Division which provide a variety of services requiring more advanced licensing, training and expertise than our standard officers can offer. This includes the ever-growing need of safety in schools, which we hire exclusively retired law enforcement for these posts, ensuring not only are we complaint with the law, but ensuring that your children get the best protection. Our Executive Protection Section houses highly-trained officers who will meet your personal security needs no matter what. Need to look into a matter of importance to you or your business? Our private investigators are ready to bring you a detailed case with all you are looking for. A new section is our drone operations, which provide aerial views on your property. We also assist emergency responders in search for missing persons or others that need help.


Finally, the Training Division ensures not only the best training for our employees, but also the best training for your team as well. Our instructors are happy to offer tailored curriculum and courses for your organization to help not only ensure compliance but also the experience to prevent loss or injury detrimental to your business. We also perform training for other security professionals of the field as we believe in improving the standard of the field.

Administrative Bureau

The second half of our company is organized under the Administrative Bureau and handles all non-physical services that we render to our clients and our back-end management of our company's operations.


Our Account Management Division is all about taking care of you, the customer and ensuring that that all of your needs are personally attended to by individual dedicated account managers of the Account Managers Unit. That way you don't get a sacrifice in quality of dealing with a pool line like some of our competitors. The Accounts Receivable Unit and Finances and Accounting Unit ensure that the billing process is smooth and takes the burden off your mind.


The Information Technology Division ensures that not only are our systems functioning correctly but also works to ensure yours are too. Through the Cybersecurity Unit and Security Technology Sales Unit, we look for the best solutions to protect your data and equipment. We have industry veterans that are happy to assist you in this matter.


The Fleet Services Division ensures our company vehicles continues to operate as they should for the quality you expect of SMSS.


The Public Affairs Division works to bridge the gap between the field of private security and bring transparency for our company. We desire to keep good relations with our community and clients, and we believe that doing the right thing always and being upfront about it is critical to doing so. A subsection of this, the recruitment team then uses our transparency and quality of service and advertises to new potential hires and clients.


Finally, the Human Resources Division ensures that the employees of SMSS receive the proper care and attention they deserve. Working to resolve all internal issues, from disagreements to discipline in order to keep to our mission. Within this, the Compliance Unit maintains all licensing and legal aspects to ensure we are always ready to serve you. Secondarily, the Psychological Help Unit brings the care and attention with trained and licensed professionals to our employees. This is a hard line of work and sometimes people need extra help to get through it. We take the extra step to offer the care to our people. Simultaneously we aim to train our officers in crisis intervention tactics through this unit as we often deal with people in crisis. There is no such thing as "good enough" as clients should get the best service afforded to them and being able to deal with these volatile situations is no exception.

Office of the Chief

 The Office of the Chief serves as the executive command and administrative center of Saint Michael’s Security Services. This office provides strategic leadership, oversight, and direction for all company operations, ensuring that every bureau and division functions in alignment with our mission.  The President, serving as the Chief of Security, is responsible for establishing company policy, defining organizational priorities, and maintaining the company’s overall strategic vision. The Office oversees both the Operations Bureau and the Administrative Bureau, ensuring seamless coordination between field operations, client services, and administrative support. The other members of the office include the leadership team of both the Vice Presidents/Deputy Chiefs and the administrative assistant to the Chief.


Directly connected to the Office of the Chief and outside the normal chain of command is the Internal Affairs Unit, which is our way of ensuring our staff keep to the high standards of our company. No one is above investigation in our company from criminal, civil, or internal company violations. Not even our leadership team is exempted. We take complaints very seriously and if you believe that one of our employees is in violation of the law or internal policy, please contact us. We seek to remain transparent in an effort to remain connected with our community. The Internal Affairs Unit reports directly to the Chief.
